
Responsible to: Room Leader / Nursery Manager
Purpose of the Post
- To ensure all children are safeguarded and their welfare, safety, and development are promoted at all times.
- To contribute to a high standard of physical, emotional, social, and intellectual care for all children.
- To support the daily routines of the nursery and contribute to the maintenance of a nurturing, enabling environment that supports children to grow and develop.
- To be a positive role model for the children and act as a reliable and professional team member.
Key Responsibilities
Safeguarding and Welfare
- Follow the nursery safeguarding procedure to ensure all children are kept safe, well, and secure.
- Ensure someone known and agreed by the nursery and parent collects the child.
- Treat any child who is unwell appropriately, notifying the Room Leader or Manager and contacting parents promptly.
- Must adhere to all company policies and procedures at all times.
Care, Development, and Education
- Contribute to and implement a programme of age-appropriate activities based on the EYFS, meeting the individual needs and interests of the children in your care.
- Observe, assess, and plan for individual children’s development in line with the EYFS framework.
- Promote inclusive practice, ensuring every child feels safe, valued, and supported regardless of background or ability.
- Encourage and model positive behaviour, social interaction, and respectful communication among children.
- Ensure the nursery environment is safe, nurturing, and conducive to supporting children’s growth and development across all areas of learning.
- Ensure that mealtimes are a time of pleasant social interaction and support the development of self-help skills.
Key Person Responsibilities
- Act as a Key Person for a group of children, building secure attachments, and ensuring their individual needs are met.
- Must adhere to the Key Person Approach as outlined in the EYFS, offering a consistent, nurturing presence in children’s daily routines.
Teamwork and Professional Conduct
- Work effectively and collaboratively with other practitioners in the room and across the nursery.
- Be flexible within working practices, including supporting with domestic duties such as preparing snacks, cleaning equipment, and setting up or tidying rooms.
- Attend regular staff meetings, training sessions, parent evenings, and other nursery events as required.
- Respect the confidentiality of children, families, and staff at all times.
Record Keeping and Communication
- Ensure records are kept up-to-date and accurate for all aspects of care including sleep charts, nappy changes, accident forms, and daily feedback sheets.
- Maintain open, professional, and supportive communication with parents and carers.
- Provide updates and feedback on children’s care and development on a regular basis, contributing to strong parent partnerships.
Health and Safety
- Maintain high standards of safety, hygiene, and cleanliness at all times.
- Conduct and support regular room and outdoor checks in line with nursery procedures.
- Be alert to hazards and follow procedures to ensure the safety of all children and staff.
Other Duties
- Participate in inductions, training programmes, and staff development opportunities as directed by the Manager.
- Support new team members and contribute to a positive team culture.
- Uphold the nursery’s values and standards both during and outside of working hours.
