Nursery Practitioner

Responsible to: Room Leader / Nursery Manager Purpose of the Post Ensure all children are safeguarded and their welfare, safety, and development are promoted at all times. Provide high standards of physical, emotional, social, and intellectual care for all children. Actively contribute to planning, assessment, and the implementation of a broad and balanced curriculum based on the EYFS. Promote a nurturing, enabling environment and encourage positive relationships with children and their families. Act as a professional role model and contribute to the ongoing development of high-quality practice in the nursery. Safeguarding and Welfare Follow all safeguarding procedures to ensure children’s safety and well-being. Recognise signs of potential abuse and follow correct procedures for reporting concerns. Ensure a secure handover system where children are only collected by authorised individuals. Adhere to all nursery policies and procedures, ensuring consistency and regulatory compliance. Care, Development, and Education Plan and deliver age-appropriate, stimulating activities that support children’s individual learning and development. Use the EYFS framework to observe, assess, and identify next steps for children’s progress. Create an inclusive environment where every child is supported to reach their full potential regardless of background or ability. Promote independence and support children’s development of self-help and social skills through routine and play. Key Person Responsibilities Act as a Key Person to a group of children, building strong, secure attachments and tailoring care and learning to their needs. Develop trusting partnerships with parents to support children’s development both at home and in the nursery. Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of children’s progress and share regularly with parents/carers. Teamwork and Professional Conduct Contribute to a collaborative, respectful team environment by supporting colleagues and sharing expertise. Demonstrate flexibility by assisting across rooms and engaging in a range of nursery duties as needed. Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, training opportunities, and nursery events. Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and integrity at all times. Record Keeping and Communication Keep thorough and up-to-date records for all care routines, observations, accidents, and incidents. Communicate professionally and effectively with parents, colleagues, and external professionals. Contribute to regular progress reports and transition documents as required. Health and Safety Ensure the physical environment is clean, safe, and organised, conducting regular risk assessments. Follow nursery health and safety policies to prevent injury and illness. Support children to understand and adopt good hygiene and safety practices appropriate to their age. Other Duties Take part in inductions, mentoring, and training of new staff, students, or apprentices as appropriate. Support nursery initiatives and development goals as directed by senior staff. To support the daily routines of the nursery and contribute to the maintenance of a nurturing, enabling environment that supports children to grow and develop. To be a positive role model for the children and act as a reliable and professional team member. Key Responsibilities Safeguarding and Welfare Follow the nursery safeguarding procedure to ensure all children are kept safe, well, and secure. Ensure someone known and agreed by the nursery and parent collects the child. Treat any child who is unwell appropriately, notifying the Room Leader or Manager and contacting parents promptly. Must adhere to all company policies and procedures at all times. Care, Development, and Education Contribute to and implement a programme of age-appropriate activities based on the EYFS, meeting the individual needs and interests of the children in your care. Observe, assess, and plan for individual children’s development in line with the EYFS framework. Promote inclusive practice, ensuring every child feels safe, valued, and supported regardless of background or ability. Encourage and model positive behaviour, social interaction, and respectful communication among children. Ensure the nursery environment is safe, nurturing, and conducive to supporting children’s growth and development across all areas of learning. Ensure that mealtimes are a time of pleasant social interaction and support the development of self-help skills. Key Person Responsibilities Act as a Key Person for a group of children, building secure attachments, and ensuring their individual needs are met. Must adhere to the Key Person Approach as outlined in the EYFS, offering a consistent, nurturing presence in children’s daily routines. Teamwork and Professional Conduct Work effectively and collaboratively with other practitioners in the room and across the nursery. Be flexible within working practices, including supporting with domestic duties such as preparing snacks, cleaning equipment, and setting up or tidying rooms. Attend regular staff meetings, training sessions, parent evenings, and other nursery events as required. Respect the confidentiality of children, families, and staff at all times. Record Keeping and Communication Ensure records are kept up-to-date and accurate for all aspects of care including sleep charts, nappy changes, accident forms, and daily feedback sheets. Maintain open, professional, and supportive communication with parents and carers. Provide updates and feedback on children’s care and development on a regular basis, contributing to strong parent partnerships. Health and Safety Maintain high standards of safety, hygiene, and cleanliness at all times. Conduct and support regular room and outdoor checks in line with nursery procedures. Be alert to hazards and follow procedures to ensure the safety of all children and staff. Other Duties Participate in inductions, training programmes, and staff development opportunities as directed by the Manager. Support new team members and contribute to a positive team culture. Uphold the nursery’s values and standards both during and outside of working hours.
